When's the Best Time of Year for Exterior Painting?

There's no coincidence that when we imagine a house painting job, we don't imagine people on a scaffolding in the heart of winter. There are definitely times to complete an exterior painting job and times not to, and as you can imagine it has to do with the weather. In order to understand why, how paint works should be taken into consideration. Paint needs to dry to full take effect, and how paint dries is strongly influenced by temperature and other weather conditions. The ideal condition for paint to dry effectively is warm dry weather. Paint doesn't adhere well to wet surfaces so the surface to be painted has to be fully dry before painting commences. After paint is applied, the weather should be dry because rain can wash off wet paint. Large temperature changes are also no good for paint, they cause paint to crack and peel if they occur before the paint is fully cured.

With that said the ideal weather in the continental United States is early summer and early fall. Here in the Piedmont region, as long as the temperature and humidity are not too high causing paint to dry too fast it's ok to commence with an exterior paint job. Too fast drying causes brush marks, clumps and uneven paint. A professional painting service like ours is the best guide for subtleties in temperature and weather that might affect the paint job. We're always happy to answer any questions.

Are oil Paints or Latex Paints Better?

Whether oil paints or latex paints are better for a job, depends on the specifics of the job. It is often said that oil paints are better for exterior jobs, the realm of the house painter, and latex paints are better for interior painting jobs, the domain of the finisher but it is not always so cut and dry.

The best thing is to be aware of the advantages and disadvantages of each kind of paint and decide based on the needs of the specific project. Latex paint is better for the environment. Oil based paints have strong fumes that can be intense indoors. Latex dries elastic which makes it good for painting vinyl siding. Oil based paint dries hard which makes it easier to clean. Indoors a hard drying paint can be good, outdoors perhaps not, the same is true of an elastic drying paint. Oil paints can have a smoother finish than latex paint.

How long does Exterior Paint last?

How long an exterior house painting job lasts depends on several factors. The material that the paint is applied to, the climate and weather conditions that affects the paint, and the skill with which the house painting was done initially are all strong factors. In general a well done paint job should last five to seven years, but this is very subject to weather and climate. For instance paint on a house with a wooden exterior in a climate with large temperature intervals probably will not last as long as paint on a house with a stucco exterior located in a more stable climate.  As rules of thumb the length of time paint lasts on a surface can be thought of thus: wood siding lasts about three to seven years; staining lasts about four years,  painted aluminum siding lasts about five years, fiber cement siding lasts ten to fifteen years, and painted brick lasts about fifteen to twenty years.

How long does it take to Paint a house?

How long it takes to paint a house obviously depends on how large the house is. Besides that and the overall skill of the painter, the amount of detail work required is also a strong factor in determining the duration of a house painting job. the How much prep work that needs to be done before painting is also important. A dirty house will need more power washing than a cleaner one. The amount of exterior repairs necessary are also a factor. More damage means more time to repair rotted wood or damaged siding. This can easily add a day or two to a paint job. Not all materials need to be primed for painting but if a home does have a material that needs to be primed this adds time too. Weather can also be influential. If it rains it painting work has to stop before things dry out. With all that said, all other things being equal you can expect a 1500 square foot house to take a day or two to paint, a 2500 square foot house to take two or three days to paint and a 4000 square foot house to take three or four days to paint.

How to Maintain An Interior Paint Job

After going through all the work to complete an interior paint job or having a professional painter complete an interior paint job for you want it to look it's best for as long as possible.

The areas where interior paint start getting dirty and get dirty the most are near knobs, light switches, bathroom and kitchen splashes, electric lamps and heaters, and near the trim and baseboards of hallways. One solution to dirty areas is repainting, but repainting can be postponed or avoided completely. Instead of painting over dirt, removing it is a more proximate solution. It also keeps it from becoming deeply driven into the paint.

The best way to clean dirt from a paint is will a mild cleaner using a sponge or soft cloth. Harsher cleaners should be used sparingly; cleaners containing alkaline will dull the sheen or luster of oil paint. Cleaners that abrade will damage a paint job. Rinsing is essential because residue will affect paints adhesion.
